When the subject of food and sleep apnea is brought up, most people assume that the connection between the two lies in being overweight, but there may be more to this.

With sleep apnea often being rooted in either a physical or psychological basis, the tendency of people is to overlook physiological factors as a contributor to this condition.

What a lot of sleep apnea sufferers do not realize is that the food they eat may be worsening their condition. For starters a lot of foods in the market today contain chemicals additives and other artificial ingredients.

Some people have a low tolerance for these food chemicals causing a physical reaction when ingested. Others may also have specific food allergies which can lead to difficulty sleeping or interrupted sleep. Other than this, certain foods can naturally cause the tissues in the body to swell, obstructing airways.

If a person with sleep apnea has a diet that consists of foods which trigger reactions in the system, then it can aggravate the condition and make symptoms worse.

How can food allergies affect sleep apnea?

How exactly are sleep apnea and food allergies related? When foods eaten have allergens in them a reaction is triggered almost immediately in the body.  As the allergen presents itself in the body the immune system begins an excessive activation of white blood cells. These attack the substance and cause an inflammatory response.

This will result in the swelling of tissue as well as increased mucus production in the system. This is brought about by the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines or inflammatory markers. According to studies, the presence of inflammatory markers in the body can lower the amount of the chemical serotonin produced by the brain. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter which helps regulate the sleep/wake cycles of the body. A reduced amount of it can disrupt the cycle causing difficulty sleeping or triggering sleep disorders.

Aside from affecting the amount of serotonin produced by the brain, allergic reactions caused by food can also affect the physical state of the body. As inflammation in the tissues occur, congestion in the nasal passage and obstruction in the upper airways can occur. Both of these conditions can be contributing factors to sleep apnea.
